Board Game Blog: The Beginning of a Passion Project - Updates 1 - 4

Hello Gamers,

This is the first of hopefully many updates towards my first and current game idea. Thanks to supportive members of the community, we are currently naming this hexed. Which attaches both the hexagon aspect of the game but also the magical casting abilities of the game.

July 1: Update 2

Game concept is a two team competing to destroy their opponents while developing their characters with spell enhancements as well as equipment through a market and currency. It will be fairly strategic and a cooperative experience that will leave players wanting to play it over and over with the ever changing battlefield.

Initial Tile Set, some filler Meeples to help brainstorm ideas and gameplay mechanics.

Newest additions:

  • Added in some ink to distinguish the spawning ring. Notice the numbers around the edge? They are to buy yourself access to starting further into the map. The further back you spawn on your side, the cheaper.
  • Developing character abilities based off of elements and life (water, fire, earth, plant, animal).
  • Characters will start with level 1 spells which they can upgrade through skill tree system (still in the works). The tiles represent a slue of things, so best not get into too much details yet.

July 6: Update 3

This weekend involved rather long trips to the airport and a dead phone. Luckily my sketch pad was available. So I did what I did best, get some thoughts down on paper and see what stuck and what needs a little more thought.
That being said, I am developing the player models for both sides, these are early concepts at best. But note the human clothing style, somewhat armored but free flowing. While the monster side varies currently to gain perspective of what fits best into the story.

I have also began developing some of the guardian NPC (non playable characters) that will be in the map. Be mindful, they are to protect the resources they find themselves in, but may be manipulated to serve your cause (still an early concept).

Not only was some sketches done on my flights, but also a lot of rule development. I would place it somewhere around 70% of the rules generated. What follows is obviously the next 30% but also reformatting the rules to where everything flows to new readers and some polishing to make it more clear on what I am trying to communicate. Most likely some examples as well (based off of what I have seen in other rule books)

Shapes fill the varying tiles to better distinguish the values/purposes of the varying tiles. For those that are color blind and may need another distinguishing factor.

What I will be needing for those who have stuck around long enough to read this whole update, is a list of people that may want to read over the rule book once it's done so I can gain criticism, questions, and where I may need to clarify any confusing parts of this book. If you're interested in more updates, drop a like to give me the motivation and courage to continue sharing this passion project as well my ideas with the lot of you. If you're interested in helping me, please send me a DM and I can add you to the list.
Please note: I am expecting this game to be more complicated then the standard iconic board games that we all grew up playing (ex: monopoly, sorry, life, etc.) So please come into it with an open mind and ask questions wherever you may need. It helps me more than you know.

Update 4: July 11

So we have a good amount of updates since we last spoke.

Color added to further distinguish the purpose of each of the varying tiles. Each serving a purpose and helping the player easier relate to varying elements.

1. Obviously designing and coloring of the tiles

  • This brings life to the board
  • Attracts people to see what is going on
  • Early review from others have said they are interested in the game without even knowing the mechanics of the game yet
  • What do you think?

2. Developed Pink Triangle purpose

  • Storage bank for each team
  • Brings attention to each of the triangles

3. Yellow Diamonds

  • Where inactivated shrines exist
  • Player needs to activate the shrine to further pursue into the land

4. Developed more of the economy

  • Players collect resources through the course of the game.
  • Has limited inventory
  • Deposits for team at each of the varying pink triangles

5. Been reorganizing the rules to better flow into the next

  • About 80% done with them now
  • Still looking for anyone interested to review them and ask questions

6. Game name could be "hexed"

  • Connects to the design of the board
  • Also connects to the story of the two sides using magic abilities off of the land they are fighting for
  • Nice reflective nature to it similar to the game field

7. Major/Minor/Unequiped Spell Slot Dynamic

  • Major deals more damage for lest cost
  • Minor deals less for cost of more
  • Unequipped cannot be casted until it is slotted into a minor spot
  • Players must properly distinguish the lay of their abilities before battle to properly engage with their opponent

What I am working on currently:

1. Players pallet

  • Each player will have one that will allow players to show what abilities they have slotted
  • Skill Tree to be on there per the player
  • Inventory space

2. Team Pallet

  • To show what resources the team has in its entirety
  • Used to pool together everyone's collections to help aid their teammate
  • Skill tree for that of the team to unlock as well (abilities/traits).

3. Networking opportunities

  • Connected with someone from work that has developed a game (which is on amazon. Look up battle of the babies) and is starting their second game. We are meeting to learn more about each other's pursuits and learn what pitfalls to navigate
  • Connected with a developer of a pretty well received kickstarter game and currently picking their brain as well.
  • If you have any potential connections that may help in the development of this idea. please let me know.

Anyways, thank you for the love and support you have shown towards this project. If you have any further questions or comments, please let me know!

Stay Thirsty my Friends,
